History/Overview
The Mini Cooper 5-door is a relatively new addition to the brand’s lineup, having been introduced in 2015. Based on the Cooper three-door hatch, the 5-door not only adds rear passenger doors but also gains interior space thanks to a stretched wheelbase.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, the Mini Cooper 5-door gets refreshed exterior styling that includes standard LED headlights and taillights, and an updated interior with a larger touchscreen.
Available Trims
Mini offers the Cooper 5-door in base and S variants. Each starts in a Premier configuration that can be upgraded to Premier+.
The base Cooper is powered by a turbo 1.5L three-cylinder engine, while the Cooper S gets a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with both engines, and a seven-speed automatic is optional.
Standard Features
The Cooper Premier’s standard feature highlights include heated front seats, automatic A/C, passive keyless entry, 16-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, a digital gauge cluster, a sunroof, Apple CarPlay, and a suite of driver safety assists called the Mini driving assistant.
The Cooper S Premier model adds a leather steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, power-folding side mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and rear park assist.
Cooper Premier+ gains 17-inch wheels, an alarm system, navigation, wireless phone charging, a leather steering wheel, a garage remote, and a head-up display. Cooper S Premier+ brings a Harman Kardon stereo.
Key Options
Among Mini’s options for the Cooper and Cooper S are dynamic suspension dampers.
Fuel Economy
Mini’s fuel consumption estimates for the Cooper 5-door are 8.2/6.2 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 1.5L engine and seven-speed automatic, and 8.5/6.2 with the 2.0L/automatic combo. Six-speed stick models are rated for 8.7/6.3 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 1.5L motor, and 10.5/7.3 with the 2.0L.
Competition
The Mini Cooper is very nearly the only subcompact hatchback left in the marketplace, with the Kia Rio being the only alternative, albeit at a lower price and with less performance. For a better match on both fronts, consider the Honda Civic hatchback, the VW GTI, or the Mazda3 Sport, all of which also offer more interior space.
